TELL US YOUR STORY IN PROSE OR POETRY! WRITING SUBMISSIONS are now being accepted for The Hudson River Reader: a collection of writings that celebrate the Hudson River during the upcoming Hudson River Quadricentennial, also called The Hudson 400. DEADLINE: February 15, 2009.
The Hudson River Reader is being created by Laurence Carr, faculty of the SUNY New Paltz Creative Writing Program, and Codhill Press editor of Riverine: An Anthology of Hudson Valley Writers, and Nancy Lautenbach, Chair of the New Paltz Planning Committee for the Hudson Quadricentennial and Director of Arts Services for the School of Fine and Performing Arts at SUNY New Paltz. Selected writings will be chosen to be read at a variety of venues during the 2009 Hudson River celebrations, posted on regional websites and published in a commemorative volume.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
PROSE AND POETRY: One poem or prose piece per writer. Electronic submissions only. Submissions should not have been previously published. Writers will be notified after this deadline date.

We will adhere to the 850 word maximum for the prose pieces. Check your word count.

The kinds of writing we are looking for:
PROSE: Short memoirs, recollections and reflections about life on and around the Hudson River. 850 word maximum. Short non-fiction essays or articles that explore the Hudson River’s political, social and cultural history, its environment and natural wonders. 850 word maximum.
We are not accepting narrative fiction at this time.
POETRY: Written in free or formal verse and that capture the images and spirit of the Hudson River. Poems should be no longer than 2 pages in length. Format can vary. Categories for submission:
STUDENT WRITERS: Group 1: Elementary Student Writers, grades 1 through 5 Group 2: Middle School Student Writers, grades 6 through 9 Group 3: High School Student Writers, grades 10 through 12
A note to our regional elementary, middle and high school teachers: This is an exciting opportunity for a student writing project, and we want your students to be involved. We would also like your input into the submission process. Please select and submit no more than five pieces (prose and/or poetry) from each grade level from each participating school. If submitting multiple writers from your school, please note the student’s name, age and school along with your name and email.
ADULT WRITERS: Group 4: College Level Writers, undergraduate and graduate Group 5: Adult Writers, under 70 Group 6: Senior Adult Writers, over 70
